Pygmy goats are small African goats. They were previously known as the Cameroon dwarf goat. The goat is mainly confined to the regions of West Africa. There are Pygmy goat breeds of similar type in all parts of Africa. However, the animal we mostly know as Cameroon Dwarf Goat is the one we are concerned with and which originally came from former French Cameroon.Â
Pygmies are regarded as meat goats, but are used primarily as pets. African Pygmies tend to be mini style goats. The average height of an African Pygmy goat is around 15 to 20 inches tall. Males weigh approximately 26 to 37 kg and females about 22 to 32 kg. They exist in various color combinations e.g. white, khaki, caramel and brown, black and grey.Â
They produce quality milk, but, considered as a meat goat. The pygmy is small, short-limbed, and does not have a heavy body. Pygmy breeds have curled coats, mid-length hair which varies with seasonal and climatic conditions. On females, facial hair may be absent, sparse, or extremely thin.Â
On adult males, ample growth of beard is attractive. The hair should be full, flowing, and widespread. These goats can produce small amounts of milk but are mainly adopted as meat goats. They have two-toed hooves, eyes that are rectangular, and a four-chambered stomach.Â
Two-toed hooves aid them in climbing, and their rectangular pupils allow them to see the surrounding environment in a large area. This allows them to look at possible threats in the area.Â
They have several stomach chambers that contain bacteria that digest the fibers of the grass. Their first stomach is large enough to contain a huge amount of food and allows them to consume a huge amount of food in a short period of time. The Cameroon region of West Africa is home to pygmies and dwarf goats. As a domestic animal, they are raised on farms but are present in the wild. In zoos around the world there are more than 1,000 goats.
It's the most prevalent livestock in West and Central Africa. These goats live in their natural environments and have high reproductive rates. They are resistant to different parasitic infections and other types of diseases.
Pygmy goats are grazers who prefer to consume trees, leaves, shrubs, twigs, and vines. They can also eat fruit, vegetables, and grass. They are also known to eat tree bark, waste, and even tin cans thanks to their robust digestive system. Pygmy goats are susceptible to predators during feeding so these goats can easily consume large amounts of food in open areas and then chew a part of it again after dodging predators and returning to a secure area.Pygmy goats are social animals, and they tend to be in groups. The actual average group size in the wild is normally between 5 to 20 animals. Males compete for dominance by attacking others, which ultimately leads to mating. Young goats, called kids, can be found huddled together for warmth and company.
